Having a good looking Tumblr will let your followers know that you mean business. The layout is important because you are mixing pictures and words throughout your page. Premium and free themes may exist that have the look and feel you want, but you just need to find them. There are plenty of themes you can pick and choose from if you please. Sometimes a theme will have just the structure you want, but it needs modification for the colors or branding you’d like to use.
If you know how to modify and replace graphics yourself, this can be easily done. The key difference that you must accept if you want to blog using Tumblr and not WordPress is that you won’t have the concept of “plug-ins” – they don’t exist on Tumblr. So anything “extra” added to a theme, will have to be added to your Tumblr theme code as raw code, meaning you should only then edit it if you know something about how to do it without erasing the style of your whole Tumblr. To import your HTML into your custom theme you will need to login and select the appropriate blog on the left sidebar inside the Settings section of the dashboard. Look for the Heading titled Theme and click the Customize button. And this can get very difficult, so make sure you look up how to HTML before hand.
When deciding on a URL, make sure it is a very easy to remember URL. You put it at the end of Tumblr dot com. If it’s easy, your followers will remember it, and it will make getting new users easy. Don’t use too many colors or different fonts. This could draw the unneeded attention to other parts of your layout that is not the main focus.
Why has Facebook looked almost the same throughout its existence? The blue header has been constant over the years, I guess you could say it’s their trademark. The blue and white F describes Facebook perfectly because they have been so popular. Eduardo Saverin, co-creator of Facebook, owns less than 10% of the company. But his net worth is more than I’ll ever make in my life time. His net worth is approximately $1.1 billion. I guess the creators of Facebook have done something right over the years. Facebook’s design has barely changed over the years. I think this is solely because it has worked and constantly brings in revenue.
Website designs shouldn’t change drastically because it could cause users to be unhappy and be lost. The Facebook design was pulled and then modified into the current version. The current version is more of a compromise. It has two sidebars to the experimental version’s one; its pictures are significantly smaller; and the search bar and other navigational tools (like the link to your profile) are much more prominent. Overall the current version is busier and less magazine-like than the experimental version. Either way, it’s a revealing look inside the design debate at Facebook. Facebook sees itself as needing to optimize its service for the lower-end, almost as if the social network were a utility (like Google Search) rather than a non-essential service (like, say, Netflix, which also won’t work well on low-end machines). Facebook values–or at least wants to be seen as valuing–access to everyone, over giving an optimal Facebook to the few.
Facebook Chat is on the right side and allows users to communicate to their friends instantly through a chat. Facebook has also now used video chat. Now you can video chat instantly to your friends through the Facebook page. Facebook will forever be popular.
HTML and MySpace
Inserting video links and songs onto your page was the newest and hip thing to do. But many have overlooked why they made it possible. The technology and code written is in depth and takes a good knowledge of how to write HTML code. I only personally know a few tricks and lines, but there are infinite things you can learn from writing HTML.
The top 8 debate was one of things that made or broke a friendship. I remember when MySpace made it an option to have more than 8 top friends. There was a way to make it up to 32. Now that’s a lot of code. I pressed ctrl-u while typing this blog, and there were more than 3600 lines of code alone. Talk about wow.
Congrats on reading this all the way through. Go Wizards!
Balance is all about ensuring that your design does not tip to one side or the other. It is like the balance of weight in achieving symmetry or asymmetry. Keeping your website balanced is key because if content is scattered around with no purpose, it looks terrible.
Grids are a series of horizontal and vertical rulers that help you “compartmentalize” a design. Columns and rows help the visualization of the website.
Every color sends out a message, and it is up to you to get the message right. Pick two or three base colors. You don’t want to have too many colors, because then it’ll look like a rainbow. Choose an appropriate color for whatever you are making your website for. ie. A basketball blog page could use colors from your favorite team or just a neutral tone.
Graphics help lively up your website. A plain boring website with no pictures, can work sometimes, but most of the time, no. Don’t just throw graphics onto the site just because. Poor graphics will drain the real purpose of the website.
Typography is very involved and has so many different aspects. If you stick with the same throughout your website, it’ll connect everything together. While it can be regarded as a branch of design, you can spend years trying to conquer all of its aspects.
White space, or negative space, has to do with what is not there. Like measure and leading, white space gives text some breathing room and spatial peace. You can make elements stand out by adding white space around them.
Connection involves both unity and consistency. A website should be thoroughly thought out and have a meaning. The design should have the same color scheme, fonts, and icons. The more in-depth a website is, the better it looks.
The Western Conference has been very competitive all year long, and I know the competitiveness won’t stop now. The teams are fueled and ready to go, and quite frankly, I’m still unsure of who will come out of the first round.
1 v 8
The number 1 seed, and best team (by record) in the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs are matched up against their stately neighbors, the Dallas Mavericks. With the Spurs leading the season series 4-0, you’d think that they have this one in the bag. And you’re right. I think the last time the Mavericks even beat the Spurs on the road, I was in high school. Spurs win easily, 4-0.
2 v 7
The Oklahoma City Thunder, number 2 seed, take on a scary team in the Memphis Grizzlies. Not because of their name, but because of their past. The Grizzlies have size, quick guards, and experience in the post season. OKC has the regular season series 3-1. OKC also has the MVP and his thunder buddy for life. This duo will be hard to stop, has they’ve proven it in the past. OKC beats Memphis 4-2.
3 v 6
Already fueled by regular season feuds and back and forth words, the Los Angeles Clippers and the Golden State Warriors are set up for an entertaining series. The regular season series is tied 2-2. With the home teams winning each game this season, this series might go 7. This series is so up in the air, I will predict that each game will by decided by less than 10 points. Clippers edge the Warriors 4-3.
4 v 5
Who’s set the record for most points in a 7 game series? If this one goes 7 games, I bet the Houston Rockets and Portland Trailblazers will make history. Number 4 seed Rockets are fueled by beards, brains, and backs. (Any basketball fan will get what I did there.) The trailblazers have a great team, but the Rockets won the season series 3-1. James Harden will average over 30 points a game. Houston tops the Trailblazers 4-2.
With the NBA Playoffs around the corner, aka, today and tomorrow, let’s take a long at what each team has to offer and why I think the Wizards have the best chance of winning. That’s not biased, I have a feeling that we are going to be a surprise to most teams and fans.
1 v 8
Number 1 seed Indiana looks hungry to dominate the number 8 seed Atlanta. The regular season series is tied 2-2. Paul George and Roy Hibbert look to avenged their lack-luster ending of the regular season. Will Atlanta upset the number 1 seed in the East? My prediction is no. Indiana wins 4-0.
2 v 7
Number 2 seed Miami, the defending champs, are matched up against the number 7 seed Charlotte Bobcats. Miami swept the season series 4-0, but that’s not going to stop the young and talented Bobcats. With Michael Jordan at the helm, they have the best player of all time as their owner. If that doesn’t get me ready for a series, I don’t know what will. Al Jefferson will go off for 30+ at least twice, they’ll make the series interesting. Miami wins 4-2.
3 v 6
Number 3 seed Toronto Raptors have surprised everyone, even me! They take on one of the most all around talented teams, the Brooklyn Nets. First year coach Jason Kidd has rebounded from a terrible start to get his team to the playoffs. With the regular season series tied 2-2, I think Brooklyn pulls it off in a close, 4-3 series to move on to face the Heat.
4 v 5
Number 4 seed Chicago Bulls take on my Washington Wizards. The Wizards have beaten the Bulls 2-1 in the regular season, with the only lose coming without big-man stud Nene. Now that he’s back, I think with the dynamic duo of John Wall and Bradley Beal, the Wizards will come out on top. The Wizards all-around depth, talent, and urge to win, will prevail the Wizards into the second round. Wizards take this series, 4-3.
